The Rufus Ferguson Quartet ft. Kenny Watson brings together five of Detroit’s most accomplished musicians to present a dynamic and soulful vision of contemporary jazz. Rooted in the traditions of jazz while embracing gospel, soul, R&B, and blues, the ensemble blends world-class musicianship with heartfelt storytelling to create performances that are both sophisticated and deeply moving. Drawing from Detroit’s rich musical legacy, the group celebrates the artistry of improvisation while crafting fresh, modern interpretations of beloved standards and original compositions.
Leading the ensemble is pianist, composer, arranger, and educator Rufus Ferguson, whose versatility has established him as one of the Midwest’s most respected musicians. Equally at home in jazz, gospel, orchestral, and contemporary music, Ferguson has shared the stage with artists including The Temptations, Marvin Sapp, Rodney Whitaker, and Wycliffe Gordon. His inventive arrangements, expressive playing, and artistic vision provide the foundation for the group’s distinctive sound.
Anchoring the rhythm section is internationally acclaimed drummer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Brandon Williams, a Grammy-nominated producer whose work spans jazz, soul, gospel, and hip-hop. Having collaborated with artists such as Robert Glasper, Stevie Wonder, Musiq Soulchild, Talib Kweli, Faith Evans, and George Duke, Williams brings an unmistakable groove, creative energy, and musical depth that have made him one of Detroit’s most influential musical voices.
On bass, Detroit native Matt Ryan provides the ensemble’s powerful rhythmic and harmonic foundation. Raised in a musical family, Ryan developed an early passion for funk, jazz, soul, and R&B, drawing inspiration from legendary bassists including Jaco Pastorius and Victor Wooten. His fluid grooves, melodic sensibility, and remarkable versatility have made him one of the city’s most in-demand bassists, performing alongside artists such as Alex Isley, Chantae Cann, Mike Phillips, Brandon Williams, and Quiana Lynell.
Featured vocalist Kenny Watson brings extraordinary emotional depth and authenticity to every performance. Widely recognized as one of Detroit’s premier singer-songwriters, Watson has inspired audiences around the world with his powerful voice, compelling storytelling, and deeply personal artistry. Completing the ensemble is saxophonist Jeff Ponders II, whose warm, expressive sound invites listeners into every phrase. His playing reflects the expressive fire of Kenny Garrett, the soulful lyricism of Kirk Whalum, and the spiritual intensity of Pharoah Sanders, while maintaining a voice that is distinctly his own.
